Common Questions
Custom Glass Balustrade Safety Rail Systems — FAQ
What is the difference between frameless and semi-frameless glass balustrades?
Frameless systems use a continuous base shoe channel or individual spigot mounts at tread level — the glass panels carry the structural load directly, with no vertical posts. Semi-frameless uses minimal stainless posts at panel joints. For Intracoastal-facing stairs where view preservation is the priority, frameless is almost always the right call. The base channel has to anchor into structural steel or concrete, not into tile or stone finish.
Does 1/2" glass or 3/8" glass meet Florida Building Code for balustrades?
Both can, depending on panel height and span. FBC Section 1607.7 sets load criteria — 200 lbs concentrated at the top rail and 50 psf on infill. We run the load calculation for your specific panel geometry. Most residential applications above 36" guardrail height end up at 1/2" heat-soaked tempered. All glass we specify is certified to ANSI Z97.1 and CPSC 16 CFR 1201.
Is low-iron glass worth the cost on a Palm Beach Intracoastal property?
For most Palm Beach clients, yes. Standard clear glass has a green tint that becomes visible when you look through the panel at an angle — and on an Intracoastal property you're always looking through at an angle toward the water. Low-iron glass eliminates that tint entirely. The price premium over standard tempered is typically 20 to 30 percent on the glass itself, which is a small fraction of a total project budget. We stock both and let clients look at samples side by side before deciding.
